ABSTRACT
Introduction: The nosocomial infections constitute a problem of health. They are of
clinical and epidemic importance because they condition higher rates of morbility and mortality.
Objective: It was carried out a clinical epidemic characterization of the
nosocomial pneumonia in the intensive care unit of the Hospital "Dr. Carlos J. Finlay" in
the understood period from January to December of the 2011.
Method: Retrospective,
descriptive study.
Results: The 22.1% of the patients presented nosocomial pneumonia
and 67.8% of mortality. The average age was from 58,5 ± 20.5 years. The group with
age of 61 to 80 years had the greater number of patients, and the highest percent of
patients in the group of dead patients (31,1%). The factors of risks more frequently
found were: use of nasogastric plumb (16,5%), use of central endovenous catheter
(15,4%) and the mechanical ventilation (13,2%). A 70% percent of the patients had
necessity of mechanical ventilation, and they had the greater number of dying (52,2%).
The three main obtained germs were: Pseudomona [sp]. (20,6%), Klebsiella [sp].
(18,4%) and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (14.7%). The first direct cause of death was
the bacterial bronchopneumonia (60,6%).
Conclusion: The nosocomial pneumonia is a
frequent infection in the intensive care unit with high mortality.
