ABSTRACT
Introduction: most occlusal indices have specific conditions more than the entire state of occlusion. However, in epidemiological studies they are a basic tool for the planning of programs for promotion, prevention and treatment of malocclusions.
Objective: to explain the historical background of the indices those are currently used in epidemiological studies to prioritize the need for orthodontic treatment.
Material and Methods: a review of the literature was conducted from a historical and current perspective, based on the reviewed original articles and information,
printed and digital texts, with high scientific rigor.
Development: various indices have been proposed relating malocclusions with
orthodontic treatment need. These indices propose to measure objectively the
severity of malocclusion and the deviation from the normal / ideal occlusion in
terms of the perceived need for treatment. Qualitative and quantitative indices that
have allowed the study of malocclusion from the first major orthodontic studies are
described.
Conclusions: as it was found, currently, quantitative methods or epidemiological
indices are the most used to determine the priorities in orthodontic treatment, which have developed throughout history.
