ABSTRACT
Erythema multiforme (EM) is a hypersensibility reaction triggered by infectious agents (herpes simplex
virus) and drugs. It is characterized by papules, pustules, vesicles, urticariform patches and iris-like erythema
termed target lesions located in elbows, knees, palms and soles. It can be classify in EM minor
when the course is benign, self limited, with minimal damage, and major when is severe with mucocutaneous
necrosis and tendency to progress to the Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). The separation of minor and major EM
in two different conditions is still controversial because some authors consider EM major as a synonym of the
Stevens-Johnson syndrome and others as two different entities.
