ABSTRACT
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate a six-month follow-up outcome of arthrocentesis for the temporomandibular joint with a modified technique.
Patients and methods: This study included 10 patients with TMJ osteoarthritis who underwent arthrocentesis, preoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for pain were compared with the follow-up scores at 2 weeks, 3 months and 6 months postoperative.
Results: This 6 months long-term study shows that arthrocentesis using a new anatomical landmark is an effective treatment method for patients with osteoarthritis of the TMJ.
Conclusion: Although we suggest that patients be treated initially with nonsurgical measures, arthrocentesis may also be indicated in patients where painful complaints do overwhelm despite other non surgical treatments.
