Treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis with laser therapy

ABSTRACT
Introduction: recurrent aphthous stomatitis is an acute inflammatory disease ranked as one of the most frequent stomatological emergencies that requires immediate attention for the inconvenience caused.Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of laser therapy in recurrent aphthous stomatitis compared to conventional treatment with tetracycline mouthwashes concerning the evolution of pain and cicatrization of lesions.
Methods: experimental study at "Andrés Ortiz Junco" Stomatologic Clinic, of Güines municipality from October 2010 to December 2011. 50 patients over 15 years diagnosed with the disease were randomly and homogeneously selected. A survey was prepared and an inventory of stress symptoms was applied. Laser was used in 25 patients and the rest used conventional therapy with tetracycline mouthwashes.
Results: the most affected age group was 15-24 years and females at 44 % and 68 % respectively. The majority of the patients presented the lowest form of the disease with 94 %. Pain was eliminated in 64 % of patients in group I compared to 48 % in group II, as to cicatrization in group I, 52 % achieved a complete healing while in group II predominated partial cicatrization in 60 %.
Conclusions: the most affected age group was 15 to 24 years and females. There was predominance of the minor form of the disease and the laser showed to be more effective in the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.
