ABSTRACT
Introduction: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders in worldwide psychiatric patology, besides being also one of the most important causes of disability and high probability of generating suicide.
Objective: Assess risk of Post Partum Depression (PPD) in the Hospital de la Mujer by applying the EPDS screening tool.
Material and methods: Prospective, cross sectional descriptive study in a sample of 131 puerperal patients during the period from October 1 to December 31, 2013. The study was conducted in the waiting room of Preventive Medicine, Hospital de la Mujer, Ministry of Health, Mexico, D.F.
Results: A sample of 131 patients which were administered the EPDS instrument was obtained. The mean age was 24.73 ± 6.55 years, 51.1% (n = 67) were primiparous, 48.9% (n = 64) multiparous. The overall average obtained in the EPDS instrument was 4.87 ± 4.80 points, range 0-23 points. Risk detection PPD was 15.26% (n = 20). Sort by PPD: PPD risk of 60% (n = 12) and; PPD likely indicator: 40% (n = 8). Analysis by category EPDS in patients at risk: dysphoria: 1.26 ± 1.08 points, range 0-3 points; anxiety: 1.65 ± 1.05 points, range 0-4 points; guilt: 1.60 ± 1.04 points, range 0-3 points, difficulty in concentration: 1.80 ± 0.05 points, range 0-3 points; suicidal ideation: 0.50 ± 0.52 points, range 0-2 points.
Conclusions: The EPDS instrument is not a diagnostic tool, but a mean of screening that if positive, requires diagnostic confirmation and specialized treatment in a mental health care unit.
