Hidden morbidity by arterial hypertension in adolescents

ABSTRACT
Introduction: arterial hypertension is the most common chronic noncommunicable disease, it represents by itself a disease and constitutes a risk factor for other diseases.Objective: to determine the morbidity hidden by arterial hypertension in a group of children and adolescents.
Methods: a descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study was conducted at "Luis Li Trigent" Teaching Polyclinic of Güines municipality, Mayabeque province, from April 1st, 2013 until March 31st, 2014, the universe was composed by the total of children and adolescents between 5-19 years belonging to the doctor's office No. 10, who were diagnosed as hypertensive or prehypertensive. A screening program was conducted by the taking of arterial blood pressure to children and adolescents. Age, gender, skin color, risk factors and associated symptoms were analyzed.
Results: 7.4 % of adolescents presented hypertension grade I and 14 % prehypertension. 68.97 % were between the ages 15-19 years, 62.07 % were male, 44.83 % had a black skin color. 20.7 % practiced smoking habit and drank alcoholic beverages. Obesity and hypersodic diet were present in 17.2 %, insufficient practice of physical exercise in 37.9 % just 2 hypertensive adolescents reported any symptoms such as cephalea and dizziness.
Conclusions: arterial hypertension was presented in apparently healthy adolescents with risk factors such as obesity, hypersodic diet, inadequate physical exercise, with minimal clinical symptomatology. Early detection of high arterial blood pressure figures in adolescence is a priority in primary health care.
