ABSTRACT
Introduction: infant mortality expresses the risk of death in children under one year old, and it is an indicator of the standard of living of the population and health of a community. Objective: to determine the factors associated with infant mortality in Mayabeque province.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, retrospective study was performed to determine infant mortality in Mayabeque province, from January 1st, 2011 to December 31st, 2012. It was analyzed: infant mortality rate in the province, age of the deceased, sex, maternal age, associated diseases of the mother, underlying causes of death.
Results: the infant mortality rate was slightly lower in 2012, with 22 deaths for a rate of 5.5 per 1000 live births. Males predominated with 76.8 %, the associated diseases of the mother were anemia with 50% and vaginal infection with 76.8 %. The main causes of death were pneumonia with 19.57 %, hyaline membrane with 15.22 % and sepsis with 10.87 %.
Conclusions: the infant mortality rate was reduced in 2012 and remains related to lower age of 7 days, anemia and vaginal infection in mothers. The main causes of death were pneumonia, hyaline membrane and sepsis. The province maintains this indicator above the national average so it is recommended to intensify the work on maternal and child risk factors.
