ABSTRACT
Introduction: breastfeeding is not only an instinctive behavior, it is an acquired practice on which women's attitude, family and social environment and the knowledge acquired exert influence. Objectives: to assess the knowledge of mothers about breastfeeding and its advantages.
Methods: a descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at 192 pregnant women in their third trimester during the period from March 2010 to March 2011, belonging to “Turcios Lima” and “Mártires del 9 de Abril” Teaching Polyclinics of San José de las Lajas. Mayabeque. The variables were: level of knowledge of pregnant women about breastfeeding, expertise and advantages thereof. A survey designed for this purpose was developed, implemented and evaluated.
Results: less than one fifth of mothers had sufficient information about breastfeeding. In just under half of the 17 explored aspects, over half of future mothers gave wrong answers. The most frequent were: the need to provide water to the child that is being breastfed, errors in the diet of the nursing mother, failures in the alternation and cleaning of breasts, false criteria related to not breastfeeding because she is heated or cold, she has anemia or is malnourished, or when the milk is clear an artificial formula must be used. Most are unaware of the benefits of breastfeeding and the beneficiaries thereof.
Conclusions: future mothers do not have the skills needed for successful breastfeeding or know the advantages of it.
