ABSTRACT
Background: Demodecidosis is a dermatosis caused by
Demodex (D) Folliculorum and Demodex Brevismites.
Demodex Folliculorum
is a 0.3-mm long transparent mite that parasitizes the normal skin with a
prevalence of 100% and a density ‹5D/cm
2 in adult population. It is considered that it plays
a pathogenic role when it multiplies and penetrates the dermis. It has been implicated in a wide range
of clinical manifestations, and it has been reported in children and adults who are immunocompetent.
The role of an eventual immunologic predisposition, genetically determined by HLA phenotypes, to
developed demodecidosis is possible. Although demodecidosis is incredibly underdiagnosed, it concerns
the daily practice of the dermatologist.
