ABSTRACT
Introduction: cerebrovascular disease is a global health problem, it is the third leading cause of death, the leading cause of disability in adults and the second of dementia. Though it is presented in people over 55 years old, it can occur at virtually any age. Objective: to determine the prevalence of cerebrovascular disease and risk factors in the population over 15 years old.
Method: an observational, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in the population over 15 years old of office № 6 of “Felo Echezarreta” polyclinic of San José de las Lajas, in 2011, 2 surveys were applied, one on general data and population risk factors and a questionnaire of 8 questions designed to detect a stroke suspicious individual. Patients with a positive response were evaluated by a neurologist and diagnostic was confirmed by interrogation, physical examination and clinical history.
Results: it was found a stroke prevalence, 3.5 %, and the associated risk factors were hypertension (92 %) and sedentary lifestyle (71 %).
Conclusions: the found prevalence and risk factors for stroke were similar to the studies reported in Latin America and developed countries.
