ABSTRACT
Autism is a disorder characterized by three basic deficits:
verbal, communicative and affective; it is accompanied by
obsessive behaviors and persists throughout life. In the past
it was considered a rare disorder but now its incidence has
increased considerably; this has led to speculation and the need
of information for both, parents and physicians. Aspects such
as diagnosis and psychological treatment have been elucidated,
but others such as etiology and genetic and neurological
alterations remain ambiguous and are a matter of intensive
research. The aim of this review is to explore the main myths
around autistic children such as: “they are gifted kids”, “they
are mentally retarded”, “it is because of a vaccine,” “it will be
relieved when they grow up”, “prescription drugs are a good
cure,” “it is inherited”, “the autistic cannot fend for themselves”,
among others, and based on the actual information reject or
confirm such myths.
