ABSTRACT
Supernumerary teeth (ST) means an increase in the number of teeth of the normal dentition. They can be unique, multiple, uni- or bilateral, impacted or erupted, their morphology can be altered or normal and both dentitions can be affected. This affection is also named: hyperdontia, third dentition, post-permanent teeth, additional dentition, dentition hyperplasia, superdentition and polydontism. The aim of this study was to know the frequency of ST in a children population. We reviewed 376 children that attended in the Pedodontic Clinic at the Facultad de Odontología, UNAM, 198 were boys (53%) and 178 girls (47%); age range was 2-12 years (mean = 6 years). A clinical history was made, oral exploration with artificial light, quantification of deciduous and permanent teeth, radiographic study and clinical photographs were also taken. Two hundred and ten children presented mixed dentition (55%); 156 were with temporal dentition (41%) and 10 children showed permanent dentition (2%). We reviewed 8,115 teeth; of them, 4,968 were deciduous teeth (61%) and 3,147 were permanent teeth (39%). In the 376 reviewed children, seven cases of ST were found. Six boys (85%) and one girl (15%). The most common ST was mesiodens (four cases; three boys and one girl).
