Systemic lupus erythematosus. Clinical findings in 31 hospitalized patients.

ABSTRACT
Background: Systemic lupus erithematosus is an autoimmune disease of unknown etiology characterized by multisystemic clinical manifestations and antibodies against nuclear components or another intracellular antigens.Obejetive: To identify the clinical features in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, in the department of internal medicine at the General Hospital “Dr Aurelio Valdivieso” in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Material and Method: We review the files of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in the department of internal medicine in a General Hospital from 2001 to 2006 according to the American Rheumatism Association (ARA 1982).
Results: A total of 34 files were obtained, 3 of them were excluded. The average age was 22.6 years, with highest incidence between the 2nd to 4th. decades of the life. The ratio female: male was 4:1, 25 females (81%) and 6 males (19%). The cause of hospitalization was kidney disease 8 cases (26%) respiratory distress 6 cases (19%), arthritis 5 cases (16%), dermatologic, neurologic and hematologic manifestations, 3 cases in each group (10%) and one case of vasculitis and another one with abdominal pain (3%). According to the ARA criteria we found: malar rash in 9 cases (29%, photosensitivity in 6 (19%); oral ulcers in 3 (10%); arthritis in 12 (39%); serositis in 17 (55%); hematologic disorders in 27 (87%); renal failure in 22 (71%); neurologic disorders in 6 (19%); the immunological findings were: ANA in 25 cases (81%). specific antibodies were anti-dsDNA in 11 (35%); anti-Sm in 2 (6%), IgG or IgM anti-anticardiolipin in 3 (10%), lupus anticoagulant in 2 cases (6%).
Conclusion: In this General Hospital patients with SLE showed renal, respiratory and hematological alterations as the most common clinical findings.
