ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the management of hazardous biological-infectious residue (HBIR) in dental offices within the Metropolitan area of Mexico City. Methodology: A transversal, descriptive, field study was carried out by means of interview-surveys and direct exploration of the residue. Assessment complied with the Mexican norm NOM-087-ECOL-1995 which describes “the requirements for separation, containment, collection, transportation, treatment and final disposal of hazardous biological-infectious residue produced by health care institutions.” Results: Surveys show that only 14.4% of the population are acquainted with the Official Mexican Norm regulating the management of HBIR, and that no single dental office handles them properly. Conclusions: Mismanagement of HBIR in Mexico City brings dentists, auxiliary personnel, trash-collectors and society in general under serious risks of infection and contamination.REFERENCES
