Quick and effective diagnosis of subungual hemorrhages

ABSTRACT
Background: The blackish, blackish-brown and brown nail pigmentation can be of different types and from different causes; they may give diagnostic doubt according to its etiology.Objetive: To reveal a quick and effective method of diagnosis for subungueal hemorrhages.
Material and Methods: Twelve patients of the services of medicine and surgery at the Hospital General de Enfermedades IGSS were studied with nail pigmentations of hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic type in the toenails. All patients underwent a scraping of the pigmentation site and the iChem test (urinary strips) was applied.
Results: The test applied was effective in ten patients.
Conclusion: Urinary strips are an easy, accessible, low-cost and very helpful method to diagnose and distinguish subungual hemorrhages from neoplasm (melanoma).
