ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic renal failure can cause diverse nail diseases and even if the cause is still not well
defined, they can be associated to the same disease or to the treatment.
Objective: To describe the most frequent nail diseases in patients with chronic renal failure.
Material and Methods: We carried out a longitudinal and prospective study in 71 patients with chronic renal failure
to find out the most frequent nail diseases in the
Nephrology Service of the Hospital General de Enfer -
medades IGSS, during June 2008. We performed a dermatological
exam of finger nails and toe nails no matter age,
sex, time of evolution of the disease nor treatment.
Results: We report 71 patients with chronic renal failure
(47 male and 24 female). The middle age of the
studied patients was 51 years. From the total patients,
32 (45 %) had less than one year of having the disease,
17 (23.9 %) one to five years, 17 (23.9) more than 5 years,
and in 5 (7 %) patients it was not possible to determine
the time of evolution of the disease. 60 patients
(84.5 %) had hemodialysis, 9 (12.68 %) peritoneal dialysis
and 2 (2.8 %) no treatment. The nail diseases associated
with chronic renal failure were more frequent
in finger nails (39 nail changes) that in toe nails
(7 nail changes). The most frequent onicopathy of the
hands associated with chronic renal failure was the
splinter hemorrhages, present in 13 patients (18.3 %),
followed in order of frequency by apparent leuko pa -
thia, onycholysis, half and half nails, brachyonychia,
koylonychia, Muehrcke’s lines and shine nails. In the
feet, the most frequent was the half and half nails in
3 patients (4.2 %) followed by the koylonychia, apparent
leukopathia and Beau’s lines.
Conclusion: Patients with chronic renal failure show
typical changes of the disease in the nails of the
hands and the feet.
