ABSTRACT
Introduction: Health economics is considered a powerful tool for efficient decision-making in the health sector. One of the key edges of this science is the study of cost of illness and its impact on the economy and society. Lung cancer currently represents a burden to the economy and health services internationally. In Cuba is the second cause of cancer death, with an increase in the incidence and mortality. The objective of this research was to identify the costs associated with lung cancer at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology (INOR) during 2012.Methodology: A descriptive study of the costs of partial evaluation type was performed. The methodological approach was the cost of the disease. The institutional perspective, the patient and family and social was included. The costs were classified as institutional, indirect and intangible direct, pocket spending was estimated. The study group consisted of 322 patients.
Results: The costs of lung cancer for the institution vary between 2967601 and 2032240pesos. Indirect costs were 457 743 and the OPM concept of a chemotherapy session is estimated at 2159.42 pesos.
Conclusions: Lung cancer has a major impact on the health of the population. Estimated costs represent the economic damage caused by the disease for healthcare institutions, patients and their families and society in general.
