ABSTRACT
Antecedents: Nail diseases by cytostatic in children. Objectives: to report the clinical experience of nail diseases in children due to cytostatic drugs.
Methods: We carried out a transversal study to find out the frequency of patients from the Hematooncology Service of the Pediatrics General Hospital IGSS. Neither age nor sex or diseases were used as criteria for the inclusion of a patient in the study, which took place during the months of September and October 2009. We performed dermatological examination on fingernails and toenails of all patients.
Results: We studied 20 patients; 13 were male (65%) and 7 (35%) female. In only 10 (50%) we found nail changes secondary to chemotherapy. Patients that showed abnormalities on fingernails and toenails totaled 5 (25%), 3 on fingernails (15%), and 2 on toenails (10%). We found fingernail dyschromia of the proximal fingernail fold in 4 cases (20%), Muehrcke bands in 2 (20%), melanonychia in 1 (10%), and Beau’s lines in 2 (20%). And we found toenail dyschromia of the proximal toenail fold in 3 cases, Muehrcke bands in 3 (30%), Beau’s lines in 3 (30%), and leukonychia in 1 (10%).
Conclusions: Nail changes by cytostatic drugs occur in children and go unnoticed due to ignorance, and because diseases of the nail apparatus are not given importance.
