ABSTRACT
Background: Multifocal epithelial hyperplasia (MEH) is a
pathology of the oral mucosa. It has been reported in diverse
ethnic groups. DNA Human papillomavirus 13 and 32 have been
detected in these lesions. The aim of this study was to determine
the epidemiological, clinical and pathological features of
the cases diagnosed as MEH in the Dermatology Center of
Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.
Material and methods: 60 000 files were reviewed, and all
cases diagnosed as MEH were studied
Results: 71 (0.1%) MEH cases were found. Most of the patients
were 7 year old or younger. Females were more commonly
affected (63.3%). 91% with multiple lesions were located
mostly on the tongue. 53 patients were treated with trichloroacetic
acid, and 17 with liquid nitrogen; 50% of them have
already finished their treatment.
Conclusion: This is the largest report of HEM cases from an
open population, demonstrating the presence of the disease in
the Mayan area of Southeastern Mexico.
