ABSTRACT
Background: Lipomas are commonly found benign mesenchymal
tumors more frequently confined to the extremities
and trunk. Lipomas arising in the oral cavity are a rather unusual
finding. Histologic features of the tumors reveal lobules
of benign mature adyposites encircled by thin bands of fibrous
connective tissue.
Objective: To describe clinical and histopatholgic findings
during a period of 20 years.
Material and method: The purpose of this report is to
evaluate the retrospective clinical presentation and histolopathological
features of 23 collected lipomas confined to the
oral cavity, and found during the hospital and private practice of
the authors during the period of January 1990 through December
2010. All cases were tabulated by gender, age, location and
awareness of the presence of the tumor, as well as clinical and
histopatholgic facts of lipomas arising in this particular location.
Results: 23 cases (12 male, 11 female). The difference between
sexes was not statistically significant. Ages ranged between 30
and 86 years old, 60 years old was the average age. The most
frequent sites involved were: buccal mucosa (13), tongue (4),
lips (4), soft palate (1), floor of the mouth. The average duration
of the lipomas was 24 months. 22 cases were simple lipomas
and 1 was fibrolipoma. The size range of tumors varied from
0.5 cm to 2 cm.
Conclusion: Lipomas represent benign tumors infrequent in
the oral cavity, and its diagnosis should include clinical manifestations
and histopathology. Surgery is the treatment of choice.
