ABSTRACT
In Mexico the salt fluoridation program has been implemented at a National level. There is limited information regarding the dental caries tendencies experienced by the Mexican school children. In addition there is little information about the oral hygiene practices of this population. The aim of the present study was to identify the changes in dental caries index occurring during a period of 20 months and to describe the oral hygiene practices of the children. The WHO dental caries criteria was used to register the dental caries indices. The years of observation were 1996 to 1998. A total of 114 schoolchildren were followed, their mean age was 8.9-years-old (ds 1.66) at the beginning of the study period. The DMFT index of the 10 to 12-year-old
students was 2.75 in 1998. More than a third (39.5%) of the participants indicated to brush their teeth, one or two times a day. Eleven percent of the children did not use fluoridated dentifrice at the beginning of the study. The regression model for DMFT at the end of the study had a significant association with dental caries index of primary teeth at the beginning of the study, number of permanent teeth at the end of the study, fluoride dentifrice. The comparison of the DMFT index (1998) with the baseline data of the D.F. of 1989 showed a reduction of the dental caries index of 30%. Additional studies are required in order to establish the factors that intervene, and their impact in the dental caries changes developed in the D.F. schoolchildren.
