ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis affects thousands of individuals
worldwide, resulting in high costs. Presents several guidelines for its
diagnosis, being proposed by the American Academy of Otolaryngology
as currently used. Computed tomography (CT) is an important
complementary examination in clinical and surgical management of
patients with CRS. The Lund-Mackay tomographic staging system is a leading scores used to assess the severity of the disease and assist in
therapeutic decisions.
Objective: To evaluate the tomographic profile according to the Lund-
Mackay score for patients attended in the rhinology clinic of Santa Casa
de Campinas, Brazil.
Material and method: A descriptive and observational study was performed
with the computed tomography scans of 20 patients treated at
rhinology clinic of Santa Casa de Campinas, en São Paulo, Brazil, during
April to May 2011, according to Lund-Mackay system.
Results: A high average score was found, with a percentage of 80% of
the values found above 4.
Conclusion: The Lund-Mackay tomographic staging system is a method
useful and widely recommended for the evaluation of patients with
sinus pathology.
