ABSTRACT

Introduction: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) still is a main cause of death and incapability in the entire world. Objective: To characterize the management of the first step of medical assistance of the patients with AMI in the cardiology service of Las Tunas. Method: We conducted a descriptive study on the management of acute myocardial infarction in the place of first medical aid in 2011. The universe consisted of 265 cases admitted with acute coronary syndrome and the sample was 187 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of myocardial infarction. Age, gender, type and location of the infarction, associated factors, the place of first medical care, drugs used in it, the number of thrombolysed patients, the time between onset of symptoms and thrombolytic therapy, Killip Kimball classification on admission, and hospital discharge status were analyzed.
Results: Males predominated. The most common associated factors were hypertension and smoking. Most patients received their first medical care in the Hospital Ernesto Guevara, a low percentage of effective drug delivery to the infarct, including thrombolysis were found.
Conclusions: Thrombolysis was carried on before 3 hours of the onset of symptoms with a high percentage of reperfusion criteria achieved. Mortality was low.
