ABSTRACT
While the function of prolactin (PRL) in pregnancy and lactation
is well known, recent research has focused on its relationship to
the hair follicle and skin, as the latter is the largest peripheral endocrine
organ linking the immune and neuroendocrine systems.
This paper describes key aspects of PRL biology and reviews
the literature on the role of this hormone in the pathogenesis
of some autoimmune diseases.
