ABSTRACT
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble hormone whose autocrine signals
inhibit cellular progression, differentiation and apoptosis via
receptors in multiple cell lines. Plasma levels under 20 ng/mL
are considered deficient, and recent studies have linked this
deficiency with an increased incidence of asthma and allergies.
Its function in preserving the epidermal barrier, and modulating
antimicrobial peptides and the immune response
impacts the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis, and has been
related to the development of diseases such as psoriasis and
vitiligo. Vitamin D induces production of folliculogenesis-regulating
genes, thus promoting regeneration and follicle maturation.
Its inhibitory role in the proliferation and promotion of
cell differentiation has been studied in melanoma and nonmelanoma
skin cancers.
