ABSTRACT
As obesity expands through the world with epidemic force, there is a growing interest for researchers to know how sensations governing food behavior of the human being are regulated. Food consumption depends upon alternating cycles of hunger and satiety. These sensations reside in highly organized centers of the hypothalamus, and are subject to an exquisite neurohormonal control. Centers regulating hunger and appetite also integrate other hormone influences originated in distant places such as the stomach and the small bowel; even environmental ones, among them photoperiod and circadian rhythms. It has been advanced that disproportionate food intake, and thus, resulting excessive body weight, are caused by dysregulations of the hunger and appetite sensations, opening the possibility of their pharmacological manipulation in order to achieve a balanced food behavior. As knowledge of the relationships centers regulating hunger and appetite sustain between themselves and with the rest of tissues and systems of the economy progresses, therapies oriented to reduction of body weight and maintenance of weight lost will be more effective.
