ABSTRACT
Rationale: Liposuction, as an assisted procedure by means of which prefixed volumes of subcutaneous fat are withdrawn, can influence upon sera lipid fractions. As more subcutaneous fat is withdrawn, change in the size of the fraction would be greater.
Study design: Prospective, analytical.
Material and method: Periperatory values (7 days before the procedure, and 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days and 60 days after the procedure) of sera lipid fractions were obtained from the first 50 patients (Women: 86.0%; Age: 34.1 ± 7.4 years) in whom a liposuction was performed due to mild-to-moderate abdominal lipodystrophy at the Service of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery, “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Clinical surgical Hospital (Havana City, Cuba), between July 2000 and December 2010. Values of sera lipid fractions were adjusted according with volume of subcutaneous fat withdrawn.
Results: Immediate, post-surgical reduction of basal sera lipoproteins was observed. Persistently diminished post-surgical HDL-Cholesterol values were found. Volume of extracted fat influenced only upon post-surgical behavior of HDL.
Conclusions: Liposuction brought about significant reduction of post-surgical values of lipoproteins. Values of sera lipid fractions 60 days after surgery were still lower than those observed preoperatively. Post-surgical behavior of HDL-Cholesterol was dependent upon extracted volume of subcutaneous fat.
