ABSTRACT
Rationale: The ELAN Study revealed a malnutrition frequency of 27.7% in the Surgical Medical Research Center of Havana (CIMEQ for “Centro de Investigaciones Médico quirúrgicas de La Habana”). A multidisciplinary nutrition therapy team operates in the center.
Objective: To determine current state of hospital feeding and nutritional care processes as offered to hospitalized patient.
Material and method: Data were retrieved on the conduction of nutritional assessment exercises, the Nil Per Oris state and hospital fasting, use of by-mouth nutritional supplements, and the use of Artificial nutrition techniques by means of the Hospital Nutrition Survey.
Results: Patients in need of nutritional therapy represented 11.7% of hospital population. However, rate of usage of nutritional therapies was low: hardly 1.0% of those admitted received any of such therapies at any given time. Malnutrition was not recognized as an independent diagnosis. Nutritional assessment exercises were incomplete.
Conclusions: Implementation of policies fostering early recognition and timely intervention of nutritional deficiencies presenting in the patient admitted to the center is required, in order to provide him/her the best nutritional care possible, to preserve | restore his/her nutritional status, and to secure the success of surgical actions.
