ABSTRACT
Rationale: The Havana Medical Surgical Research Center (known in Spanish as CIMEQ for “Centro de Investigaciones Médico quirúrgicas de La Habana”) is an institution specialized in the surgical activity and organ transplant. Up to this date there are no estimates of the institutional frequency of hospital malnutrition. It is likely malnutrition to be a comorbidity of patients assisted at the center.
Material and method: Current state of hospital malnutrition was estimated by means of Detsky et al.’s Subjective Global Assessment of nutritional status (1987), as part of the Cuban ELAN Study of Hospital Malnutrition. Sixty-five patients (Males: 58.5%; Ages ≥ 60 years: 56.9%; Hospital length of stay › 15 days: 33.9%) assisted in the different medical and surgical services of the institution were surveyed between January 2012 and December 2012.
Results: Malnutrition frequency was 27.7%. Hospital malnutrition concentrated among Internal Medicine, General Surgery and Orthopedics services; was prevalent among subjects with a level of instruction equal to or less than sixth grade; and associated with infection diagnosis. It could not be demonstrated hospital malnutrition to be related with length of stay.
Conclusions: Hospital malnutrition constituted an important comorbidity of patients assisted at the institution. Patients at increased risk of malnutrition should identified and intervened in order to preserve their nutritional status and the success of surgical medical therapy.
