ABSTRACT
Rationale: Urinary excretion of creatinine is a marker of the size of skeletal muscle mass in human beings. Each gram of creatinine appearing in urine equals 17–22 kilograms skeletal mass. Local reference intervals for urinary excretion of creatinine have been derived from retrospective analysis of the databases of the Urine Section, Clinical Laboratory Service, “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Clinical surgical Hospital (Havana City, Cuba). These intervals have been in use for the last 10 years as part of the nutritional assessment exercises conducted in the institution.
Objectives: To update local reference values for urinary excretion of creatinine, and to assess if significant changes in predicted values for Cuban subjects have occurred. Study design: Analytical, retrospective.
Material and method: Creatinine urinary excretion values as measured in subjects of either sex, with ages between 19–58 years, preserved renal function, and adequate weight for height (18.5 ≤ Body Mass Index ≤ 27.4 kg.m
-2), were recovered from the databases of the Urine Section. In addition, accuracy of 24 hours urine collections was verified. Local reference values for urinary excretion of creatinine, after adjusting for sex, were obtained from the regression line Creatinine
urine, mg.24 hours
-1 = f(Age, Height; ), : parameters vector.
Results: Urinary excretion of creatinine expected for a Cuban male with 35 years of age, 170 centimeters of height, and adequate weight for height is 1,217.2 mg.24 hours
-1. On the other hand, urinary excretion of creatinine expected for a Cuban woman with 35 years of age, 160 centimeters of height and adequate weight for height is 878.6 mg.24 hours
-1. Updated reference values were not different from those ones previously reported.
Conclusions: Nutritional assessment and body reconstruction exercises conducted upon the subject assisted at the institution should include the local reference values of urinary excretion of creatinine presented in this article.
