ABSTRACT
Rationale: Perinatal events (that can occur from the very early stages of intrauterine life up to birth) are associated with body weight excess in the adult.
Material and method: Nature and strength of the aforementioned association were assessed by means of a retrospective, analytical, case-control study, with school children with ages between 6-11 years living in the county of Holguín (Holguín, Cuba), born from mothers with similar gestational ages (between 37–42 weeks), comparable regarding sex and age, and without health problems, between 2007 and 2008:
Cases: Overweight present: 200 children with Body Mass Index (BMI) z-score › 1 standard deviation regarding the reference value (NCHS National Center for Health Statistics) for children of the same sex and age; Controls: Normal weight: 200 children with BMI z-score between ± 1 standard deviation from reference value. Strength of association between perinatal events and excess body weight in the examined school child was estimated from the corresponding odds-ratios.
Results: Excess body weight in the school child was strongly associated with low birth weight, insufficient weight gain, associated maternal diseases, and the mother’s low body weight on pregnancy diagnosis.
Conclusions: In children born with disorders of fetal growth control of accelerated weight gain in the first months of life is relevant for prevention of future development of obesity.
