ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic renal failure (crf) affects all bodily systems.
Consequently, it may cause various nail conditions, both
non-infectious and infectious, including onychomycosis.
Objective: To determine the incidence of onychomycosis in
crf patients under hemodialysis.
Material and methods: This study involved 42 crf patients
undergoing hemodialysis and concomitantly afflicted with nail
changes suggestive of onychomycosis. Tests performed included
koh 20% and mycobiotic agar. Diagnosis was confirmed by
direct koh test.
Results: Twenty-four patients were diagnosed with onychomycosis
(57%) and the causative agent was isolated in 10
instances (41.66%). Diabetes mellitus was confirmed in 10 individuals
from this group (41.66%). The most frequent clinical
form was distal lateral subungual onychomycosis (65%), with
Trichophyton rubrum as the most commonly isolated microorganism
(60%).
Conclusions: Over half the patients with crf undergoing
hemodialysis developed onychomycosis. The concurrence of
diabetes mellitus may increase the incidence of onychomycosis.
