Ultrasound of thyroid nodules in adults. Polyclinic 'Dr. Mario Escalona Reguera' in 2013

ABSTRACT

Was conducted a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study in order to characterize nodular thyroid disease in adult patients attending the Ultrasound Diagnostic Service of the Polyclinic "Dr. Mario Escalona Reguera" in 2013. The sample was composed by 286 patients with ultrasound diagnosis of thyroid nodule that met the inclusion criteria. The most affected sex was female (94.06%) and aged between 40 and 69 years, with a slight predominance of the age group 50-59 years (24.47%). The largest representation is obtained in the form of uninodular presentation (54.2%), the size between 1 cm and 1.9 cm in transverse diameter (39.51%) and anteroposterior (43.71%), the location in the right lobe (56.64%) and sonographic features: mixed echogenicity (38.11%), regular margins (89.16%), absence of calcifications (69.58%) and peripheral hypoechoic halo (66.08%). The 7.34% of thyroid nodules showed suspicious sonographic features of malignancy, predominantly in the uninodulares presentations (61.9%) in the age group 60-69 years (2.60%) and females (16 patients), but the risk was higher for males (29.41%).
