ABSTRACT
Objective: To investigate the prevalence of rheumatic illnesses that
required admission to the emergency department from January 2011
to December 2012.
Material and methods: A retrospective study was performed with the
records of the Emergency Room to identify the most common rheumatic
illnesses.
Results: In 2011 were admitted to the emergency room 18,210 patients,
35 of them with rheumatic illnesses: 11 with lupus and 8 with rheumatoid
arthritis, the mean age was 51.6 years. In 2012 were admitted
to the emergency room 15,866 patients, 20 of them with rheumatic illnesses: 7 with lupus and 3 with rheumatoid arthritis, the mean age
was 46.3 years. Females were the most affected.
Conclusion: From 2011 to 2012 only 55 cases of rheumatic illness were
registered. The rheumatic illnesses implying the highest risk for life are
systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.
