ABSTRACT
Objective. To prove the effectiveness of LCP (locking compression plate) used by the Department of Orthopedics of the Mexican Red Cross Central Hospital and verify the time needed for fracture consolidation with the use of LCP.
Material and methods. One hundred and twenty six fractures were analyzed prospectively in 105 patients. All of which were treated with LCP plates in a period of time of 24 months (from January 1° 2003 to December 31 of 2004). Radiological monitoring was carried out in the following fourth, eight and twelfth weeks.
Results. It was found a greater frequency in male patients, with 90 patients (86%) rather than in female patients with 15 cases (14%). Seventy two percent of the injuries happened within a productive age period. Sixty five percent (81 fractures) of the patients was treated with LCP of 3.5 mm. The required time for consolidation in 50% of the cases (63 fractures) was from 7 to 9 weeks.
Conclusions. The consolidation time was reduced with the use of LCP even the open fractures. The complications were considerably less frequent with the use of LCP plates. The most affected osseous region were those of the forearm (radius and ulna). The age group most frequently affected was that of the patients between 21 to 30 years.
