ABSTRACT
Sir John Charnley was born in England in August 1911. In 1935, he obtained the degrees of Doctor in Medicine, Surgeon and Master of Science in the University of Manchester. One year later, when he was 25 years old, he was accepted as a Fellow at the Royal academy of Surgeons of England. In 1950, he published the books entitled “Closed Treatment of Common Fractures” and “Technique of Arthrodesis by the Compression of spongy bones”, regarded during a long time as being a book of basic concepts in Orthopaedics. His major legacy was the creation of the concept which defined the modern era in total hip replacement, the low friction arthroplasty, that was analyzed in his third book. That concept, Sir John Charnley was a pioneer in the concept of metal-plastic surfaces, based upon his observations on cartilage friction. At present, there are some followings of Charnley arthroplasties that present good results after 40 years. Charnley died at the age of 71 years old, in 1982.REFERENCES
