ABSTRACT
Introduction: More than two million patients acquire nosocomial infections every year. Objective: To characterize the epidemiological and clinic situation of infection associated to sanitary assistance in the Intensive Care Unit of Cárdenas Territorial Hospital.
Method: A research in health systems and services in the period from 01/01/1010 to 31/12/2011. This descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study allowed analyzing and comparing the behavior of infection associated with health care in the intensive care unit for two years, attending to different aspects. The study group consisted of all admitted patients (964) during the study period. Data were obtained from the record books of cases enabled for that purpose, and processed by a management system built in Microsoft Office Access.
Results: The variables studied showed that in 2010 the highest incidence rate of infection associated with health care (16.4%) was observed. Respiratory infections associated with mechanical ventilation (25.9%), followed by bloodstream sepsis were the most frequent location. The microbiological map was dominated by Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus with similar distribution at all sampled sites.
Conclusions: Ventilator-associated respiratory infections and bloodstream sepsis were the commonest sites locations. Computing proved to be useful in the promptness of data analysis.
