ABSTRACT
Introduction: Systemic Candidiasis is a frecuent problem in the Intensive Care Units.
Objective: We conducted a case-control study of very low birth weight infants in the neonatal ward of the Obstetric Hospital of Santa Clara during the years 2007-2011, in order to characterize the occurrence of systemic candidiasis.
Method: The universe was made up of all preterm infants weighing less than 1500 grams born in that period. 23 infants, who developed systemic candidiasis and the same number of infants chosen consecutively after the study group, who didn’t, totalized the sample.
Results: The incidence of this condition was 11%, gestational age between 28 and 29.6 weeks (56.5%) and weight between 1000 and 1249 grams (52.2%) were predominant in the study group. The incidence of systemic candidiasis was higher compared with the available literature. The significant variables were: low gestational age and birth weight, severe diseases at birth, fungal colonization, previous local bacteremia, prolonged mechanical ventilation, parenteral nutrition, multiple and prolonged antimicrobial therapy and steroids and H
2 receptor antagonists use.
Conclusions: Systemic Candidiasis incidence of preterm infants was irregular and high.
