ABSTRACT
Rationale: Manifestations of atherosclerosis
could be dependent upon the state of blood
lipids.
Study design: Analytical, retrospective.
Study serie: 202 patients (Males: 70.8%; Age:
49.5 ± 11.6 years) in whom a Digital
Subtraction Angiography (DSA) due to clinical
manifestations of regional atherosclerosis.
Patients were distributed according with
observed lesion of arterial tree: Lesion absent:
11.4%; Coronary lesion: 11.9%; Vascular brain
lesion: 18.8%; and Peripheral arterial lesion:
57.9%; respectively.
Materials and methods:
Completed blood lipid profiles were recovered
for studied patients. Association between
observed values of blood lipids and the presence
of regional atherosclerotic lesion was assessed.
Results: Patients with lesion of the coronary
tree showed raised values of serum triglycerides.
Patients with vascular brain atherosclerosis
exhibited diminished HDL figures.
Conclusions:
Association between blood lipids and regional
atherosclerosis was not as strong as anticipated.
Patients with damage of several arterial vessels
within a specified region showed normal (or
moderately increased) values of blood lipids.
Studied association might have been modified by
patient´s sex. Conduction of prospective studies
with non-invasive techniques are recommended
in order to further dwell upon the link between
dyslipidemia and regional atherosclerosis.
