ABSTRACT
Temporomandibular ankylosis is the bony, fibrous or cartilaginose fusion of the surfaces which conform temporomandibular joint: temporal glenoid fossa-mandibular condyle. The ankylosis can occur in growth period or after this has been completed, affecting mandible function and sometimes facial aesthetic. The damage of this pathology may affect many areas, such as the functional, aesthetical and psychological. The etiology is, in a great number of cases, caused by trauma of the articulate area. The goal of this treatment is to eliminate the bony fusion, and create a new joint that contributes to improve the mobility, and avoid reankylosis by placing new metallic prostheses made of titanium that will replace the mandibular condyle. Two cases of bilateral temporomandibular ankylosis in adult patients that where treated with condylectomy and replaced with bilateral metallic condyle prostheses are reported. This procedures where done in the Hospital de Especialidades No. 71 Torreon, Coah. IMSS. Good results are obtained, aesthetical as well as functional. There are few cases reported in Mexico about the use of bilateral total condylar prostheses. Besides, a review of literature concerning temporomandibular ankylosis and use of total metallic condylar prostheses was done.
