ABSTRACT
Introduction: the acute respiratory infections are a group of illnesses caused by different germs that affect the respiratory tract and constitute the first cause of consultation, hospitalization and death in the children less than 5 years in underdeveloped countries. Objective: to determine the influence of risk factors hypothetically related with the acute respiratory infections in children less than a year.
Methods: it was performed an observational cohort study in a popular council of Veguitas at Ramón Heredia Umpierre Polyclinic since January to December of 2010. There were selected the newborns in this period (n= 87) and some variables that represented the risks (low birth weights, deprivation of maternal breastfeeding before the six months, protein- energetic malnutrition, poor socio-economic conditions and associated diseases). It was formed an exposed cohort; those that were risk free constituted the unexposed cohort.
Results: the acute respiratory illnesses have a multifactorial origin. The low birth weights did not represent a risk in this study for this group of illnesses.
Conclusions: the risk factor that was associated with a greater strength was the deprivation of the exclusive breastfeeding before the six months of life, followed by the protein-energetic malnutrition, the unfavourable socio economic conditions and the associated diseases. The low birth weight was not a risk factor.
