ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the influence of the occupational exposure to mercury on oxidative stress and genotoxicity biomarkers.
Material and method: Studies were carried out on 12 workers aged between 25 and 56 years exposed to mercury during their work from 6 to 33 years. The control group consisted of 43 healthy workers aged between 25 and 65 years not exposed to chemical or physical agents. All participants were included after signing the informed consent form. The oxidative stress markers were measured by spectrophotometric methods and DNA damage was deter-mined by the Comet assay.
Results: In the group of exposed to mercury, a significant increased was found in oxidative damage to proteins, DNA damage and the activities of the enzymes superoxide dismutase and glu-tathione reductase. Moreover a significant decreased in catalase activity, concentrations of thiol groups and total antioxidant capacity was found.
Conclusions: The present data show that chronic low dose of mercury leads to oxidative stress conditions, which promotes damage to genetic material.
