Methods: aqualitative pedagogical study was conducted with 216 students from a universe of 778 at Raúl González Sánchez School of Dentistry during the school year 2011-2012. A self-evaluation survey made up of 35 closed questions was applied to the students to characterize their self-preparation based on the following indicators: use of study time, organization of study conditions, concentration and study method, using the results interpretation table.
Results: in use of study time, 63.4 % of the students were graded Poor. In organization of study conditions and concentration, 43.5 % were graded Poor. In study method, 64.8 % were graded Good or Very Good. In all, 2.7% were graded Very Good, 30 % Good, 42.1 % Fair and 25 % Poor.
Conclusions: the most affected component of student self-preparation was the use of study time, based on the large number of students graded Poor, followed by organization of study conditions and concentration. The study method was the most developed component of self-preparation among the students taking part in the research. There are difficulties in the organization of self-preparation among the students taking part in the research.
