ABSTRACT
The current review deals with some theories and previous research to illustrate the varied explanations for the gender differences in depression. Therefore, the criteria and findings of several researchers are exposed, as well as some explanations and limitations of the published articles. All investigators think that the rates of prevalence of depression are higher in women, but there are no agreements for the rates of recurrence that seem to be equal in both sexes. Some biological factors, such as hormonal and genetic may contribute to the differences in depression. A greater exposure to stressors has been proposed as being part of the explanation for the female excess in the risk for depression. Women are also more vulnerable to the depressogenic effect of the stressors. The men and women respond differentially to antidepressants. More recent studies have suggested that while men respond better to tricyclic antidepressants, women show a superior response to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
