ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the incidence in the last 5 years of occipitoatlantal dislocation, to analyze the kinematics that cause him, associated clinical manifestations and evolution of these patients after their admission in the hospital.
Methods: An observational, descriptive, retrospective and transverse study was carried out of all patients with diagnosis of occipitoatlantal dislocation in the provincial Hospital of Quelimane in a five year period. The sample was constituted by 13 patients. The main clinical variables were related to each other.
Results: Occipitoatlantal dislocation was presented with more frequency in the pediatric ages. The automobile accidents and falls of elevations were responsible for 76.8 % of the luxations. In 7 of the accident victims an II type luxation was diagnosed. Cardiorespiratory instability occurred in 5 cases. The clinical evolution was unfavorable in 76.8 % of the sample.
Conclusions: The diagnosis and opportune treatment, as well as the appropriate use of the diagnostic tools can improve the results of these patients.
