ABSTRACT
Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most frequent parasitoid disease
in Central Nervous System. In neuroimaging, MRI is
able to detect the different biological stages of cysticerci,
whereas CT is more sensible for calcified lesions.
Single voxel spectroscopy (MRS) measures different metabolites
concentrations, among others: N-acetyle -l-aspartate,
choline, creatine, lactate and myoinositol.
This study was performed in 20 patients, both sexes, age 28
- 66 ages with clinical diagnosis of NCC and CT scan studies. In
these patients, 13 appear to have lactate by qualitative analysis;
however, this was confirmed in only one patient by qualitative
analysis. In the 12 remaining patients this was considered to be
due to lipids, aminoacids and water contamination.
Single voxel proton MRS helps to characterize NCC, but
not to establish a definite diagnosis. Since similar findings
can be present in other cystic and necrotic lesions.
We found no MRS difference in cystic and colloidal stage
of NCC in this group of patients.
