ABSTRACT
Introduction: patients with chronic end-stage renal failure on periodic hemodialysis
programs present a wide variety of non-specific symptoms. These patients often have
emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression, which could be associated with
the aforementioned symptomatology. Some studies have shown that such symptoms
may forecast survival in an independent manner.
Objective: identify the actual prevalence of depression among patients on periodic
intermittent hemodialysis and the association of such symptoms with clinical and
laboratory variables.
Methods: an analytical cross-sectional observational study was conducted of patients
with 3 or more months on periodic intermittent hemodialysis due to chronic end-stage
renal failure cared for at Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Central Military Hospital from June to
August 2010.
Results: it was found that the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 52.6 %.
Depressive symptoms were mild in 35 %, moderate in 60 % and severe in a mere 5
%. The relative risk for depressive symptoms was greater than 1 among women,
elderly patients and persons with a low schooling level.
Conclusions: Depressive symptoms are common among patients on hemodialysis.
The predominant symptoms are mild and moderate, and they are somewhat more
frequent among women, elderly persons and patients with a low schooling level.
