ABSTRACT
Introduction: The non-invasive ventilation (NIV) has shown to be an effectiveness treatment for respiratory insufficiency produced by an exacerbation of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is known that this system reduces the respiratory work and thus the expiratory muscle fatigue.
Objectives: To describe the triggering factors related to prognosis.
Methods: A prospective, longitudinal and descriptive research conducted in 80 patients under non-invasive ventilation admitted in emergency intensive care unit of the “10 de octubre” Teaching Clinical Surgical Hospital diagnosed with exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Results: The respiratory sepsis was the leading triggering factor and that required more ventilation time where the worse prognosis was in male patients aged over 65. The hydroelectric alterations, the acid-base balance and the cardiovascular diseases were the factors more related to an unfavorable evolution.
Conclusions: The NIV may be used as treatment of patients presenting with intrinsic pulmonary disease and markers of hypercapnia (PaCO
2 › 60 mmHg).
