ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the demographic and anatomo–pathological characteristic of the brain metastases, as well as the frequency of neurological death.
Methods: It was carried out a traverse retrospective descriptive observational study. The entirety of studies postmortem carried out to patient of 15 years were processed and more in the Dr. Luis Diaz Soto’s Hospital in the period understood among December from 1962 to December of 2011, contained in the database of Autopsies created by the SARCAP.
Results: The brain metastases corresponded to 2.4 % of the total of autopsies and 8.9 % of the total of deceased’s with systemic cancer. The age average 55.8 years. It prevailed in masculine sex (1.4:1). The lung prevailed as primary organ. The more frequent was supratentorial (70 %) and cortico-subcortical (81.9 %) localization. The neurological death presented a frequency of 36.1 %.
Conclusions: The brain metastases had a low frequency. The demographic and anatomo-pathological characteristics corresponded with previous studies. It was a low proportion of metastases of unknown origin. The frequency of neurological death went similar to that of the clinical series.
